For Kendell and Krystal Roberts, one journey came to a happy conclusion this week just as another begins.

On Monday morning, amidst family, friends, co-workers and Habitat volunteers, the Roberts family were invited to a surprise gathering, as Habitat’s Vice President Jonathan Mitchell announced that they had been selected as the Habitat for Humanity of Nodaway County partner family for the next Habitat home.

This journey began in May as Kendell and Krystal filed their application papers and began Habitat’s family selection process. According to Rex Brod, Habitat Family Selection Committee Chairperson, Habitat seeks to match the family with the greatest demonstrated need for a new home, as Habitat fulfills its mission to provide decent, safe and affordable housing.

Habitat families are required to participate in the construction of their home with “sweat equity” as they work with professionals and volunteers in the home building process. At the conclusion of the construction, the Roberts will purchase the home from Habitat through a 20-year zero interest mortgage.

Kendell is employed by Community Services of Maryville and Krystal at Nodaway Nursing Home. With their daughter, Payton, they look forward to moving into their new home in Skidmore next summer.

Habitat owns the construction site in Skidmore and will meet with the family over the next few months to finalize the home components. Plans call for the slab to be poured and plumbing work completed this fall with actual construction of the home to commence in the Spring of 2012. Volunteers will construct the home on weekends with the home targeted to be completed later in the summer and dedicated to the family in August, 2012.

“I am totally overwhelmed with the thought of moving into this house,” Puckett said. “It just means the world to me to see my children have a house like this. All the volunteers that have helped with building the house have been amazing.”

Previously, Habitat homes have been built in Hopkins, Skidmore, Burlington Junction, Pickering and Maryville.
